For a number of years I had been doing soft tissue release therapy as part of my Sports Medicine and orthopedic pain
relief treatments. While similar to Active Release Techniques (ART), and certainly I know practitioners using soft tissue release techniques who think they are the same thing, it is not.
ART is a more scientific, tissue and movement specific therapy, by far.
Instead of mashing muscles through the range of motion, the Certified ART Provider will trap the target tissue and separate it from the others it has become adhered to by putting the tissues through their particular range of motion while the contact is held. This method causes less irritation and provides for greater success in normalizing function and reducing pain because of its specificity of diagnoses and treatment. I have seen the caveman approach of the more generalized soft tissue release actually make conditions worse because of the lack of proper diagnosis and tissue-specific treatment.
I am proud to be a Certified Provider of ART- the educational process is thorough and extensive. My patients will tell you the treatments are highly effective. Indeed, there are providers who practice this therapy alone. I have done this, but often find that when combined with Motor Point Acupuncture I can provide an even more significant and quicker change in improved function and reduction of pain. And I always send my pain patients home with self-care including postural correction and support exercises that empower them to avoid future injury and recurring pain.
I have recently become part of the Active Release Techniques Ironman Provider Network. Look for me under the ART tent prior to race day in Oceanside and IM St. George, and possibly other North American races this year. I’ll be out on the course for IMCA this year and am looking forward to the training after a few years away from triathlon racing and coaching. See you out there!
